Noseeum Peak

The lake with Hector behind

Noseeum Lake with Mt. Hector behind

July 18th Monday 2016

Noseeum peak is 22 km from the junction of Hwy 93N and Hwy 1 at Lake Louise. On the east or right hand side of the road. The trail is across Noseeum Creek from the parking. Noseeum is not a popular hike so don’t expect to see anyone on the trail. The summit log had only three entries this year. Follow the trail along the creek past a couple of rock falls. In about 30 min is the first sight of the headwall. Look for a couple of cairns on the right side between the two waterfalls. See pictures. There is a nice switch back trail up. At the top of the headwall look for a trail to the left that is not very visible. But the direction is towards the next waterfall that you have to cross and may be able to see. After crossing the waterfall keep below the rockwall heading left looking for a gap through. See picture. Next is a flat area of slabs head right is to Noseeum lake and find a way through, or go left to bypass the lake. Once on the big open plateau the lake and the scree gully are in sight. At the top of the scree gully on the small col gets a bit scrambley. The left side is the less so. At the col is the start of the ridge to the summit. One false summit and a push to the top should see you there in about hour. Views are spectacular. Looking into Dolamite Pass and both Molar Passes. Across the valley to the Wapta Icefields. Mt Balfour,  Niles and Daly and the ever present Mt Hector and the Molar Glacier. Also in view are the lakes of Hector and Bow. We all found this scramble tiring due to the un-even rock underfoot most of the way.
