Cox Hill

Guardian of the summit

July 18th Wednesday

This Cox Hill hike starts from Dawson Trailhead which is just 3 km up the Powderface trail road from the Sibbald Creek hwy 68. Both roads are gravel. Be aware that the trailhead has two routes from the parking lot one for horse use the other for foot passengers. We missed this and crossed on a log instead of over a very nice bridge. The trail is well worn and the only choice to make is not to go down the Tom Snow trail. The trail rises rapidly through the trees on a rocky surface. Thinning trees give some relief and  occasional views. Eventually out of the trees there  are a couple of switch backs before the false summit then a pleasant stroll to the flat end. Watch out for the large Marmot guarding the trail. The alternative to getting to Cox Hill is to come along the ridge from Jumping pound. This way has better views but is much longer. See https://willski.ca/jumping-pound-mt-to-cox-hill/ Given the choice between the two go to Jumping Pound.
