This is an ongoing project to walk, many people will bike, in sections the new High Rockies Trail along the Spray Valley. The trail is to run from the Goat Creek Parking on the Smith Dorrien Highway to Elk Pass at the south end of Kananaskis. Then it would be possible to go all the way to Elkford in BC. The trail is to open by 2017 to co-inside Parks Canada 150 anniversary.
I have completed the first section from Goat Creek to The Tree Sisters Dam on Spray Lakes. https://willski.ca/high-rockies-tra…hree-sisters-dam and Three Sisters Dam to Driftwood.https://willski.ca/high-rockies-trail-section-2-three-sisters-dam-to-driftwood/ This section is from Driftwood day Use Area and Boat Launch to 1km from Spencer Creek. Going passed the Wind Pass Trail and Spurling Creek. The trail is easy to see from the Driftwood Day Use as it is just across the road from the road entrance. The trail heads up into the trees above the road and then traverse along to the south. The road is not in sight and although most of the time you are in trees the odd view of Spray Lakes comes in view. There are a few bridges and many watersheds to cross that also opens up the views to the mountains above. We ran out of time to reach Spencer Creek so will catch that piece next time.
Distance return 8.5 km Time return 3 hrs ( inc 30 min lunch ) Elevation Accumulated gain 294 m Elevation to Summit 84 m Summit height 1800 m
