Anklebiter Ridge I did not know this was the official name on the Gem trek Maps so I use to call it Grotto Pond Mt near Canmore for the two small mountains to the East of Gap Mt and Exshaw Creek. The trail starts at the Grotto Pond or Grotto Canyon parking. The best place to pull in is the turn before going east into Baymag and go straight ahead where there are a few spots. The picture above shows the route over White Creek. Then it is straight up. The trail is obvious but the high point you see is not the summit.
Re-visited on a very rainy day June 10th 2016. The only route change was to follow the ridge down from the summit after still going around the steep scramble from the summit it was to wet to try this route. Added one photo of Simon on summit and re did the GPS route.
As you can see there is no let up in the ascent with a bit of scrambling along the way.
Lots of rock slab work – choose a dry day.
After the false summit this is the view to the main summit.
This is the view from the summit to the next ridge and the trees beyond. The dirct route would be to go ahead and scramble down but as you have no idea what is below you we took off to the left and angled down and around. On further inspection from the bottom it does look do-able only for the experienced scrambler.
This is the way around. From this point turn right to work your way back along the rock ridge.
Looking back up at the scramble down from a lower point.
It looks easy to arrive here but you have to down climb through the trees and then back up to this point. In the distance you will see the roof of a cabin and that is where you head for. Down climb to the small treed col .Go a little left and pick up the trail.
Distance return 7.4 km Time return 4:30 hrs ( inc 30 min lunch ) Elevation Accumulated gain 944 m Elevation to Summit 885m Summit height 2142 m
