My write up on Echo Canyon is a sad one as it is written in remembrance of Gundel Rau. The last time I hiked with Gundel was on this hike and as usual she guided us up to the sign with great knowledge of the maze of trails. Happy trails and thanks for the memories.
The Echo Canyon trail is a local trail on the bench of Grotto Mountain. We started from the Alpine Club House road but you could walk from anywhere off the Horseshoe Trail Loops from Elkrun Blvd. Follow the trail signs to Grotto Mountain but stay right in the gorge and exit on the right of the gorge. Head up hill and hopefully find the sign in the above picture. Good luck because trails run all over the place. Although not far from home this is an interesting half day hike. The re-bar ladders make it that bit more special. It maybe a maybe an interesting hike in the spring when the snow melts and the canyon head becomes a waterfall, though the canyon could also be un-navigable due to the water.
